Let them eat cake! Supposedly, Marie Antoinette uttered these words and it resulted in her losing her head. Actually, this is really not true. While Marie Antoinette was certainly enough of a birdbrain to have said the phrase in question, there is no evidence that she actually originated it. Some say it was simply journalistic cliche. Others like Lady Antonia Frasier suggest, “It was said 100 years before her by Marie-Therese, the wife of Louis XIV. It was a callous and ignorant statement and she [Marie Antoinette] was neither.” Marie was accused of many things but the most infamous accusation was of incest toward her young son, and was accused along with her sister-in-law, of doing such a wretched deed. This was untrue.
Nevertheless, the French people accused the Queen of treason and other high crimes and murdered her anyway. France wanted to rid itself of all the royalty which was left. Thus, any excuse was sufficient in order for them to kill its royals. What killed her is France wanted change and she wanted power to stay with the royals. She was an unrepentant enemy of democratic ideals (Smithsonian).
So, why does Marie Antoinette have to do with Halloween? I think if she had said Let Them Eat Cake, I really don’t think even she would recommend this group of gory and gruesome cakes.
