Harry Morgan, the prolific character actor best known for playing the acerbic but kindly Colonel Potter in the long-running television series “M*A*S*H,” died today at his home in Los Angeles. He was 96. His son Charles confirmed his death, saying Mr. Morgan had been treated for pneumonia recently.

If someone asked me which colonel from M*A*S*H that I preferred, it was Colonel Sherman Potter. Harry was brash when it was called for and subtle, gentle, and emotion in the next minute. His voice had range and he was a truly gifted actor. Sure, he is described as a character actor, but I feel he transcends that title. He may not have been Brad Pitt or Clark Gable, but he was more amazing to me than any leading man.
