2012 Films Raves and Pans (Short Edition)

Does it seem like the word “Blockbuster” has lost it’s luster? You don’t really hear the word thrown around as much these days? And like the Toronto Sun has reported, I too think that it is only time before there is the death of the Hollywood Blockbuster due to portable content. There is a tremendous ocean of independently released content – not just from less established individuals but from stars as well.  More and more celebrities are becoming the stewards of their careers (or simply have been) – see Chris Hardwick, Wil Wheaton, and Felicia Day as examples.

There are still some good movies coming out of Hollywood, but Hollywood studios are scared. They have become too concerned with a sure thing (no matter the quality) than taking a lot of chances. The sea is volatile and they are unsure how to ride out the storm.

One of the things that I feel that Hollywood lacks is imagination. TV shows have better packaging and extras than movies. People will pay for content and extra information on the movies they like. However, you get too many movie releases that have barely a shred of extra content and/or  the extra content provided is pathetic. I have seen better offerings from Korean Pop groups. That’s not to disparage Kpop, its to say different industries and even foreign pop culture is doing it better.

Anyways, enough with the ranting. I have come to offer up a simple list of raves and pans for the year that was 2012 (based on what I have seen).

2. The Hobbit

3. The Avengers

4. Moonrise Kingdom

5. The Woman in Black

Prometheus-BTS-9
As if the acting and story weren’t bad enough….

There are only 4 pans because the rest of the movies that other people have listed as worst – I won’t give the time of day. I took a chance on these five.
